Jack Russells are smart, athletic, opinionated, and tireless. They form intense bonds with their primary person, are highly trainable when motivated, and can learn complex behaviors faster than most working breeds. The catch: their bored mind invents work. A JRT left without a job will dig up the yard, scale the fence, hunt the cat, redecorate the sofa, and bark for entertainment. This is not bad behavior — it's an unemployed working dog filling the vacuum.
They have powerful prey drive. Small furry animals (rats, squirrels, hamsters, sometimes cats) are not pets to a Jack Russell; they're work. Same with terriers and other dogs of the same sex — JRT-on-JRT aggression is well documented. With consistent training, early socialization, and a real outlet for energy, Jack Russells are devoted, hilarious, and genuinely great family companions. Without those? Different story.
