Irish Terriers are bold without being aggressive, affectionate without being needy, and intense without being unhinged. They form deep bonds with family and are protective in a measured, watchful way — they alert to genuine threats and don't waste energy on the mailman every day. With proper socialization they're excellent with children and devoted to the household.
The terrier traits run strong. Irish Terriers do not back down — historically they were used against vermin, otters, and even larger game, and that fearlessness shows up in encounters with other dogs (especially same-sex). They are generally not safe with small pets. They have plenty of energy and need a real job. With consistent training they're one of the most rewarding terrier breeds; without it, that intensity becomes a problem.
